Bakis is an ancient title apparently originating from prophetic figures such as Jesus and Moses. It apparently emerged as a result of the spontaneous utterance of the word during moments of excitement while making eye contact with strangers, since ‘bakış’ refers to eye contact in Turkish.

Bakis is considered a prophetic title in Ancient Greek literature.1 According to Herodotus, in language deprivation experiments conducted by Pharaoh Psamtik I, babies were eventually reported to have uttered a word that sounds like “bekos”.2 According to traditional interpretations of the Torah and the Quran, Moses had been taken in by a Pharaoh as an infant and later had difficulty speaking to his own people and was assisted by Aaron. Notably, there were also two babies in the language deprivation experiment attributed to Pharaoh.
